1. Definition of GTM According to Experts :

1. Original definition : ”a method of foreign or second language teaching which makes use of translation and grammar study as the main teaching and learning activities.” (Richards, J., and Rodgers, T.)

Paraphrase : "A teaching approach for foreign or second language that primarily relies on translation and grammar study as the key activities for instruction and learning."

2.  Original definition : ”In general, the GTM is considered a teaching methodology that isolates language from its communicative function.” (Zulprianto (2012))

Paraphrase :"GTM is a language learning method that focuses on grammar and translation, but tends to ignore the communication function of language."

2. Definition According to Personal Opinion about GTM :

"In my opinion about Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a method of studying language that focuses on understanding grammatical rules and translating texts,with the aim of helping students to understand language structure in depth through reading and writing exercises.

3. GTM Features (Minimum 10!) :

1. Features: Primary Focus on Reading and Writing .

• Example: The teacher assigns a long reading text and then asks students to write down the main points of the reading without any speaking practice. 

2. Features: Using the Mother Tongue (L1) as the Language of Instruction.

• Example: The teacher explains complex grammar rules using Indonesian so that students truly understand the structure of the foreign language.

3. Features: Text Translation from the Target Language to the Mother Tongue.

• Example: Students are asked to translate a paragraph of an English article into Indonesian word for word.

4. Features: Vocabulary Memorization in List Form.

• Example: Students are given a list of words (e.g., apple = apple, book = book) and are required to memorize them for the next test.

5. Features: Deductive Grammar Explanation

• Example: The teacher writes the Simple Past Tense formula (Subject + V2) on the board, explains the rule, and then provides example sentences.

6. Feature: Accuracy Takes Priority Over Fluency.

• Example: The teacher immediately stops and corrects students if they make spelling or punctuation errors in the sentences they are working on.

7. Feature: Focus on Sentence Structure and Grammatical Rules.

• Example: Students are asked to analyze each word in a sentence, determining which functions as a subject, verb, object, and adverb.

8. Feature: Lack of Listening and Speaking Practice.

• Example: During class, there is almost no listening to audio from native speakers or dialogue practice between students.

4. Advantages of GTM According to Experts

”Grammar then will guide the speakers to form correct sentences. 

Furthermore, translation can help language learners realize the differences and similarities in forms and semantics between the source and target language.

Additionally, translation can aid language learners in understanding the distinctions and similarities in structure and meaning between the source and target languages.They often translate internally. For learners of a second language, referencing their native tongue appears to be inevitable. Some researchers who incorporate translation into their lessons have found that it can be a motivating activity."

2. Original opinion :

”GMT has a few advantages. The first advantage is translation. This is the processes by which the teachers or the students are translating the grammar rules as well as the thebilingual lists of vocabularies from source to target languages or vice verse. The second one is vocabulary explanations where the students or the teachers themselves give vast explanation of the meanings of phrases and words of the target languages equivalent to the source languages. The other advantages of GMT is linguistic problems that do not create hindrance to the communication between students and teachers because not only the students but also the teachers be able to use their mother tongue in the classroom in teaching and learning process. hence they don’t get challenges in speaking between the teacher and the students and the communication is very smooth. i.e. teachers who are not fluent in spoken English can easily teach English to students using grammar-translation method. Since mother tongue is also used while teaching a foreign language in the method and also students feel comfortable developing the concepts of grammar, understanding the teachers' instructions and responding to questions.”

Firstly, it facilitates translation, allowing both teachers and students to translate grammar rules and bilingual vocabulary lists between the source and target languages. Secondly, it provides opportunities for vocabulary explanations, where teachers or students can thoroughly explain the meanings of phrases and words in the target language as they relate to the source language. Another benefit of GMT is that it addresses linguistic challenges without hindering communication between students and teachers. Both parties can use their native language during the teaching and learning process, which helps to avoid difficulties in communication and ensures a smooth interaction. For instance, teachers who may not be fluent in spoken English can effectively teach the language using the Grammar-Translation Method. Additionally, since the mother tongue is incorporated into the teaching of a foreign language, students feel more comfortable grasping grammatical concepts, understanding the teacher's instructions, and responding to questions."

5. GTM Disadvantages According to Experts

1.Original opinion:

 ”the GTM is at least said to be ineffective for two chief reasons. First, the class uses the students’ native language as the medium of instruction. Second, it focuses too much on the details or intricacies of grammar of the target language, and overlooks the importance of, for example, speaking, pronunciation, listening, and so forth.”(Zulprianto (2012))

"The GTM is often considered ineffective for two main reasons. Firstly, it employs the students' native language as the primary means of instruction. Secondly, it places excessive emphasis on the complexities of grammar in the target language, neglecting essential skills such as speaking, pronunciation, and listening."

2. Original opinion :

”stated few disadvantages of Grammar Translation Method as well one of this is, it is an improper way to teach a foreign language because language teaching is not to help the students with communicative competence than meaning or translation competence. The other one is, the process of learning begins with reading and this creates problems for many. Since the emphasis is laid on written texts and reading, the necessity to speak in the target language is ignored completely. Consequently, the students who have learned English through this method feel very uncomfortable communicating in English afterwards in or outside the classroom due to their proper use of their mother tongue while learning through this method; they feel comfortable and thus develop a habit of speaking in their mother tongue only and later on in their life find themselves unable to communicate in the target language. Another disadvantage of learning a foreign language through grammar-translation method is the extensive need of memorizing vocabulary, grammatical rules, and verb conjugations. As a result, students become so conscious of keeping the sentences grammatically accurate that they lose the natural flow of the language. Besides, the correct usage of vocabulary in correct positions results destruction for them.”

"The Grammar Translation Method has several drawbacks. One major issue is that it is not an effective approach for teaching a foreign language, as it focuses more on translation and meaning rather than developing students' communicative competence. Additionally, this method starts the learning process with reading, which can pose challenges for many learners. By prioritizing written texts and reading comprehension, the need to speak in the target language is often overlooked. As a result, students who learn English through this method often feel uncomfortable communicating in English, both in and out of the classroom. They tend to rely on their native language during the learning process, which leads to a habit of speaking only in their mother tongue. Later in life, they may find themselves unable to effectively communicate in the target language. Another disadvantage of the Grammar Translation Method is the heavy emphasis on memorizing vocabulary, grammatical rules, and verb conjugations. This focus can make students overly concerned with grammatical accuracy, causing them to lose the natural flow of the language. Furthermore, using vocabulary correctly in context can become a significant challenge for them."

“Very good. Today, we will learn how to make simple sentences and translate them.”

Learning Objectives

“Today, you will learn how to make simple sentences using daily activities and translate them from English to Indonesian and from Indonesian to English.”

Main Activity

1. Grammar Explanation

Teacher:

“We use simple sentences to talk about daily activities. The pattern is: Subject + Verb.”

Teacher writes on the board:

I eat

I drink

I play

Teacher explains the meaning in Indonesian.

2. Vocabulary Introduction

Teacher writes:

Eat = makan

Drink = minum

Play = bermain

Read = membaca

Teacher:

“Please repeat after me.”

Students repeat and write the vocabulary.

3. Example Sentences and Translation

Teacher:

“I eat rice.” → “Saya makan nasi.”

“I play football.” → “Saya bermain sepak bola.”

Teacher explains word by word.

4. Translation Practice (English → Indonesian)

Teacher writes:

I drink milk

I read a book

Teacher:

“Translate these sentences into Indonesian.”

Students:

Saya minum susu

Saya membaca buku

5. Translation Practice (Indonesian → English)

Teacher writes:
